“Players
should expect the best - We can deliver”
News: “Big
Start to 2012 Field Lacrosse Season!”
Right
out of the box and onto the field, Try Lacrosse and an NCCP coaching clinic
kicked off this year`s field season before our Provincial teams headed off to
the Labour Day weekend Alumni and First Nations Cups.
Three
free try lacrosse sessions where held at Wanderers Grounds in great weather and
included a very successful Women`s field lacrosse clinic. Loads of new box
players tried the game for the first time, as well as a few new players to
lacrosse. The last boy`s session was run by special guest Rick Phillips, who
has coached Ontario Provincial box and field teams as well as many of the top
NLL and MLL players that Canada has produced.
Just
as successful as the men`s try lacrosse sessions, Julie Finck and Natasha
Burges have recruited a huge number of female coaches from local universities.
Many of the coaches have played competitively in Canada and the USA. The strong
women`s program continues each Saturday morning through to November from 9-11am
at the Burnside Fields, where the girls practice and play (See Special Event
below).
Along
with the special field sessions Rick Phillips ran the two-day Men`s Competitive
Intro clinic in which eleven NSFLL and MUFLL coaches participated. All
Provincial field coaches attended and Rick provided game strategies and drills
that the coaches used over the next week and at Nationals to their advantage.
On
Labour Day weekend, Oshawa hosted eight U16 and six U19 provincial men`s field
teams at the Alumni and First Nations Cups. Coaches Brendon Smithson, Bryan MacEachern
and Brian Knockwood chalked up Nova Scotia`s first ever National`s win against Manitoba
and U19 coaches Jon Goguen and Ryan Fougere lost by one to Quebec in overtime.
With
the great momentum created by the Provincial program and women`s field
lacrosse, field lacrosse continues till November at Burnside with local and
Millbrook teams competing within the NSFULL season schedule. This also includes
the men`s Open division where senior players compete each Friday and the
long-weekend Turkey Shoot tournament, October 5th-7th. At
the University level, all five MUFLL teams are back in action traveling the
province in league competition each weekend. For more information regarding
both leagues, go to www.nsfll.ca and www.mufll.ca.

“Field drills
from white board to players”
There
are a series of youtube videos posted by Notre Dame that are great for coaches
looking for defensive drills. Go to youtube and search for titles like “FIRE”
Escape Ground Ball”, “3 Mand Handle”, “Ball Bag”, “Ground Ball Train” and
“Gauntlet”. These videos not only have white board explanations, but are
followed up with players running through the drills.

you have any tips you’d like to share, email them to lacrossetechdirector@sportnovascotia.ca
Column: “Provincial
News”
Discussed
at the last LNSS board meeting, the plan is to start the Provincial box and
field application process October 1st with the deadline for
submissions being November 1st. The successful candidates would then
be announced at the LNSS 2012 AGM Saturday, November 24th. Head Coaches
should check ``55 Links`` to view minimum certifications required for coaching
staff http://cla.pointstreaksites.com/view/cla/coaching-3/certification.
Column: “Alumni
News”
The
East Hant’s Recreation Department would like to start a lacrosse program in its
area for players over the age of eighteen. There are many athletic programs for
younger players, but less opportunity for older individuals. This would be a
great opportunity for Alumni to get involved. LNSS will help run several Try
Lacrosse sessions and the first couple of evening programs, but longer-term
coaching assistance would be a great help for lacrosse in the area. For more details contact lacrossetechdirector@sportnovascotia.ca .
